What is the City of Lights program?
Our City of Lights Program is an initiative started by Neighborhood Coalition to install and maintain LED string lights in and around the front yards of neighborhood residents. Our hope is to:
Reduce criminal activity by increasing overall night time lighting throughout the neighborhood
Create a unique identifier for our neighborhood that is both practical and beautiful
How does the program work?
The Neighborhood Coalition team will professionally install the LED lights at no cost to the homeowner/tenant. The lights will be connected to an exterior outlet with a timer that will power the lights during night time hours.
As needed, Neighborhood Coalition will maintenance/repair the lights at no cost.
The homeowner/tenant will only be responsible for the utility costs to power the lights, estimated at $15.78 per year ($1.30/month)
City of Lights
New Orleans’ sister city, Paris, France, is famously known as the City of Lights. While many could attribute this title to the sparkling Eiffel Tower, the origin of the name dates back to the reign of King Louis XIV. During his rule, Paris faced significant crime issues, prompting the king to hire the first police chief, La Reynie.
La Reynie's primary initiatives focused on cleaning the streets and illuminating the city with lanterns. These efforts not only enhanced the city’s cleanliness but also significantly improved safety and security. His work was recognized in 1669 for bringing “Security and Clarity to the City.”
Inspired by this history, Neighborhood Coalition’s City of Lights program aims to illuminate our community streets.
